You'd like to estimate your project's cost or schedule accurately. So far, none of your approaches have worked. It's time to consider how you can create an accurate estimate. You might not be able to develop an estimate at the beginning of a project that is good until the end. Few project teams can. Instead, learn a number of ways to see your project and how to address your uncertainties in ways your managers will accept.

I wanted to learn more details on software project estimation, to become more methodological. I have 12 years developer experience and good common sense, but needed to learn more formal approach. This book is disappointing. Full of generic statements and links to buy other books by same author.

Predicting the Unpredictable Pragmatic Approaches to Estimating Cost or Schedule (Audible Audio Edition) Johanna Rothman Zoe Walrond Deyan Audio Books Reviews
That is not my first book concerning this topic, but it is definitly worth to read, you find a lot of concise information in it. The author shows with every page, that she really knows the problems of the topic and how to avoid all the pitfalls, she shows solutions for the agile manager and how to sell it to the higher management.
Short and up to the point, I recommend to read it for every manager, product-owner and scrummaster (and not only for starters).
Another great work by the pragmatic Johanna Rothman. This book is an excellent resource for those of us who are constantly asked "how much will this cost?" If you have ever been unsure about how to answer it, this book will take you by the hand and present you with a blueprint to how to tackle it. The way Johanna teaches us how to estimate will not only make your stakeholders happy, but will provide you with predictions that are useful, helpful, and insightful in the context of your projects. Highly recommended.

Project Management for You How to Turn Your Ideas Into Reality, Deliver On Your Promises, and Get Things Done
Anyone involved with delivering a product or a project will have to face two questions when will it finish, and how much will it cost?
The questions are straightforward and simple, they are also justified, but the answers are the source of a huge literature with a lot of books and articles, leading to heated debates and claims. And if you're dealing with a software-intensive product or a project, you already know the difficulties of making predictions about future.
In this no-nonsense and pragmatic book, the author tries to look at the various aspects of predicting the timing of software projects. Given the statistical nature of the problem at hand, and the thirst for determinism of the business, she manages to clarify the concepts and draw attention to critical pitfalls. One of the things I really appreciated is the fact that author is very well aware of what kind of pressure the upper management can put on the shoulders of a software project manager she has clearly been through such situations, and constantly focuses on how you can convey the fragile nature of ambitious of project predictions.
I can easily the recommend because I think it'll useful for practicing software managers, as well as the developers who try to evaluate whether they are working with good management practices.
So, as the author says, make your features small, break down that epic, go on a spike, don't multitask, put an expiration that on your estimates, always use confidence numbers for your predictions, communicate your status concretely, provide value at the end of each increment, and get to work!
One of the big questions in organizations is “How much will this project cost?” The other question is “When will this project be done?” In fact, the bigger the project, the more the people in the organization want to know. The problem with these questions is that they are predictions.
How do you deal with requests to estimate what will be delivered by what date? Johanna Rothman’s excellent book Predicting the Unpredictable gives you answers.
The title basically gives it away how do you predict the unpredictable? Rothman gives clear recommendations on how to make, revise, and communicate estimates using proven techniques.
The book is filled with loads of good quotes
* “Since software is about learning, and we rarely, if ever, do the same project twice, we are always estimating the unknown.”
* “In many ways, estimating project budgets or dates for agile projects turns out to be irrelevant.”
* “Some managers want you to estimate the budget as well as the date. And now, you’re off into la-la land.”
Many readers will find the final chapter most rewarding Troubleshooting. Rothman explains the dangers of the common practices of multi-tasking and team switching, how to use spikes, how to estimate testing time, and the three big estimation traps.
A must read for product leaders, product managers, and project managers.
This is a great book for those that have the feeling that their estimates are wrong, especially in an agile context. The tools here, the approach to thinking and the hidden things that really effect estimate accuracy (eg context switching) are all covered.
Picked up this book to better understand alternative ways to estimates projects, and Johanna provides excellent advice on ways to help "predict" the unpredictable that is software development. Her suggestions help satisfy the usually present ends of the spectrum in a software organization - upper management's question of "when will it be done" and a team's usual answer of "when it's done." Highly recommend this and her other titles!
This is a very good book. It is concise, it uses simple language and it progresses logically. For those of us that have been estimating for some time, and understand the problems, this book will encourages meaningful changes. If you are new to software estimation this book will help you understand the process and it's traps, along with how you can work with the problems. If you are currently debating your estimation process at work, trying to introduce change, use this book for guidance and get others (especially management) to read this book and discuss the benefits change could bring. Sommuch great advice from such a short book. Awesome.
